For my first photo assignment for the interactive journalism Master’s program at American University, the professor sent the class out to take practice taking photos with the following shots in mind:
2. Shallow Depth of Field
3. Deep Depth of Field
4. Environmental portraits
5. Multiple Planes
It was a hazy afternoon when I set out to take photos, and I thought I’d take advantage of the clouds and crappy lighting to take some spooky photos around Bunnyman Bridge.
For my first shoot ever, I don’t think I did half-bad! There are some things I could definitely improve upon such as my action shot, which should have more movement in the train. But I think I came away with a few strong photos, especially the vertical environmental shot of the bridge–with all of the detail in the ground, moving water, and the perspective of the shot, I’d have to say that it’s my favorite shot from the day!
(UPDATE: Read Matt Blitz’s fantastic history of Bunnyman Bridge in Washingtonian. You may recognize some of the photos ?)
